A 4-foot diameter circular artwork that functions as both a visual piece and a working clock. The clock face is made up of 12 petri dishes arranged in a circle, each containing a different species of bioluminescent bacteria. The bacteria are engineered to luminesce on a 24-hour cycle, with their glow intensity peaking at their assigned hour. The hour hand is a moving ultraviolet light that triggers additional fluorescence in the bacteria, while the minute hand is a thin metal filament. The centerpiece is a small ecosystem of glowing plankton that responds to gentle currents, creating a constantly shifting pattern of light.
